They drink matcha lattes, have arguments on Tiktok and like sex. “I Love LA” by and with comedian Rachel Sennott is pure Gen Z.

Maia is close to orgasm when the bed starts to shake. The shaking becomes stronger, a picture frame falls from the nightstand and shatters. Her friend wants to stop because the shaking is an earthquake. Maybe the one big thing that will destroy everything, he fears. But Maia insists on her climax. The 27-year-old knows what she wants and is willing to accept a lot to get it. And not just in their sex life.

In order to ingratiate herself with her agency boss, she forces her boyfriend to go on an unpleasant double date in order to throw him under the bus. She begins to manage her frenemy – which she had just blocked on Instagram – as an influencer in order to finally have a client. If you want to make it in Los Angeles, you just have to hustle.

The concept of “I Love LA” is certainly nothing new: a young woman who wants to make it in the big city (either New York or LA) and has to try to balance her strenuous job, love life and friend life. „Sex and The City“, „Insecure“ or „Girls“ showed how it works.

The series

„I Love LA“, 8 Episoden, HBOMax

The new series by and with comedian Rachel Sennott as Maia (genial in „Shiva Baby“) does a particularly good job of capturing the spirit of the times and the reality of life of Generation Z. The characters – from the boss to the influencer girlfriend to the gay stylist friend – are mercilessly exaggerated and terribly annoying, but the series takes them seriously.

And so you’re rooting for them to see whether they’ll get their iced matcha latte, survive the shitstorm on Tiktok or land the job with the Christian influencer. The biggest surprise from the young people’s lives is in any case: filter cigarettes are being smoked again – even in the anti-smoking stronghold of Los Angeles!
