entwined forever, we are…

a/o 08.08.26

I have shared with you the US Distributors list I made, as well as ones for financiers, US theatrical bookers, US Film Publicists, and Fiscal Sponsors. It is about time I gave you a list of International Sales agents, yes? And please let me know what’s needed next too, okay?

My first company Good Machine had an arm that was a sales agency. Way back when, when James Schamus made a film that no one wanted to rep, we sold — or rather licensed — it ourselves. That film had the highest ROI percentage to budget of any film in the world that year, and we didn’t even really know what we were doing. We knew just enough to recognize there was a business there, and it then only took about two years to convince David Linde to leave the #2 spot at Miramax to become our #1. Good fun.

In those days you could pre-sell American execution-dependent authored cinema to international distributors, and David and his team were really good at it. We could greenlight movies without actually investment; Linde just need to get 120% of the cost in on paper, ideally leaving the US open. We financed about fourty-four films that way, half of which we owned with the filmmakers.

Ah…. those were such different days than where we are now, eh?

Hope For Film is both Dick Tracy’s wristwatch and Clark Kent’s x-ray vision — a tool box and a super power, only here it is all directed at the FKATheFilmBiz. HFF examines what was, is, and will or may be. If I do say so myself, it is time for you to consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Thanks.

Somewhere along the line, the role of the sales agent shifted a great deal too. They often became the person strategizing the financing with the producer. They became expert in bank lending of all sorts. What kind of tax credit was it? Did you need another tranche? Mezz level? What about a bridge loan? Not always, as the larger production companies brought those shenanigans in house too, all the better to figure out how to fee it properly, right?

And of course pre-sales for the sort of films I love sort of keeled over and died. Again not always, but generally speaking. Their estimates sheet became the permissions basis. What they thought you could get, if and when you delivered it, was what the whole financing puzzle was constructed around. So we went through a few cycles there too. Some over inflated the estimates, all the better to get that budget bigger — even if it bit you on the way out. Then they grew overly conservative, so they’d be best recognized for keeping their word — a rare quality in any town. But that also shrank the quality of more than a few films, as if you don’t have what you need, how are you going to give the customers what they feed on?

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SPONSOR

The global media consolidation driven first and foremost by the global streaming platforms pursuit of all customers killed off many of the territorial buyers, limiting the financing options for each and every film. The days of the buyers picking up an unknown film — like Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet, the Berlin Golden Bear winner that Schamus and I sold out of our backpacks way back when — for virtual peanuts are long gone. They generally demand either well known actors or big prizes from one of the top fests if they are going to pick it up.

Coming around to today, the role the sales agents plays, is determined by who you choose to hire for that role. They do things their way, and you best know upfront what that is in each and every case. Luckily you have ways to ask the questions still. These Q’s I wrote back in the Producer’s Rep Era (maybe it’s time to bring that back), but they hold up alright.

And there are always problems of one sort or another. Simple fixes… that never get done. Maybe one day there will be an entity for our industry focused on problem solving… until then I can just take it upon myself to spot some problems challenges.

So who’s who? I tried to go wide. In the SC-Indie land of America, we’ve always shown a bias to the US, UK, and EU-based sales folks, and I think those days are over, so I included the ones through out Asia, to the best of my knowledge and search. I included some of the lists I drew from at the end. And yeah I asked Chat to name who was in charge where, so I am sure I have some inaccuracies. And things change very fast in this field. Companies come and go, with executives being even faster. This, like ourselves, is only a work-in-progress.

But it is interesting that there are so many. Just like there are so many US theatrical distributors. When you are trying to get your film made, you’d think with so many options, you’d be able to find someone that was a better than average fit for your project. Sure, the finance teams at the different agencies all have their favorites — or rather their three favorites — but we all can’t go to the same usual suspects, can we? You’d think there would be at least twenty stellar companies if there was so much business to be had. I don’t mean to cast any shade on any of these companies, but why aren’t more shining these days?

I started with a list of about one hundred such companies, but as I looked across the different resources I kept finding more and more… ones I knew of but forgot, ones I knew executives at but from another company. They just keep sprouting up like rabbits.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SPONSOR

I didn’t separate out the specialist, but listed where I know they focus on documentaries or animation. I suppose next pass I could name the genre specialists?

Also, why I have your attention, I have some specifics I’d like to build into this list if anyone wants to help. I share some of those details at the end too to show how. And if you spot any inaccuracies just DM me on Substack and I will update it. Thanks.
