On the severe flood disaster in Mozambiquewhich has destroyed the homes and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people since mid-December 2025, the federal government responded with emergency measures amounting to 640,000 euros. This emerges from a response from the federal government to a written question from left-wing MP Maren Kaminski, which the taz has received.
Kaminski criticizes the amount as being far too low. “In view of this dramatic humanitarian situation, the aid provided by the federal government is completely inadequate and must be urgently increased,” demands the politician, who is a member of the Committee for Economic Cooperation and Development for the Die Linke parliamentary group.
“The heavy rains and floods are a consequence of climate change caused by the Global North – Germany bears responsibility and must not abandon the people of Mozambique,” said Kaminiski. Support for people in need should not depend on what was currently in the main news. The federal government has made 240 million euros available for the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria in 2023.
The money for Mozambique will go towards the provision of relief supplies and emergency accommodation via the Red Cross and the Technical Relief Agency as well as a humanitarian embassy project that is intended to provide aid in an unbureaucratic manner.
720,000 people affected
In its response, the federal government points out that it is also financing projects in Mozambique regardless of the current crisis. This year, 3.3 million euros have been earmarked for this, including as part of the World Food Program and the United Nations Refugee Agency, “which can also be used to deal with the consequences of the current flood disaster,” says the Federal Government’s response.
Health care must continue, even when entire communities are under water
Anabela Langa, Maputo Health Authority
In addition, the federal government is participating in the United Nations Emergency Relief Fund, which has provided $5 million at short notice. The government is also currently examining how further support for those affected can be provided from the existing development cooperation budget, the answer continues.
According to the United Nations, 720,000 people in Mozambique have been affected by the floods in southern Africa. In addition to hundreds of thousands of homes, critical infrastructure and agricultural land were destroyed. The United Nations reported that around 1,500 kilometers of roads were impassable, cutting off key supply routes and isolating vulnerable groups.
Now there is still a threat of a cholera outbreak
The World Health Organization warns of a cholera outbreak. “Floods not only displace families, they also affect access to basic health services,” sagt Anabela Langga from the Maputo Provincial Health Authority. The Ministry of Health is prioritizing the care of pregnant women, children and the most vulnerable people in emergency shelters. “Health care must continue, even if entire communities are under water,” appealed Langa.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization said at the end of January that it needed around 27 million euros for the next three months to provide essential food and nutritional supplements to families suffering from the consequences of the floods.
