Third gold for Franjo von Allmen: A hero who can’t quite believe it yet

Franjo von Allmen wins the Super-G at the Olympic Games in Bormio. He is only the third male skier to win gold three times.

There are already three gold ones. Franjo von Allmen also won the men’s Super-G on Wednesday after downhill and team combination. The 24-year-old ski professional from Switzerland ensured very early on that he would become the superstar of these games.

Allmen’s sensational success in Bormiowhere the men hold their alpine competitions, has a history and at the same time it comes as a surprise. The history is short: in 2025 he became double world champion in Saalbach, Austria. Since then we knew that there was an exceptional talent racing down the slopes in Switzerland. When he was in just a few days before the Winter Games Crans-Montana won, it was clear that he would arrive as the Olympic favorite. However, in the Super-G, which he was now able to win, Allmen’s teammate Marco Odermatt was considered the first contender for victory. He only came third.

Franjo von Allmen, who comes from the municipality of Boltigen in the canton of Bern, set himself up professionally at an early age. At the same time, he introduces himself as a locally connected sportsman. “To gain the necessary groundedness, I trained as a carpenter. A profession that I still enjoy pursuing when I get the chance,” reports Allmen on his fan club’s website.

It is unlikely that his life will continue in such a down-to-earth manner. With the successes at the Olympics, von Allmen is only the third male skier – after Toni Sailer (1956) and Jean-Claude Killy (1968) – who won gold three times at the same Games. Not even Rosi Mittermaier, whose double gold is currently celebrating her 50th anniversary, can keep up. Felix NeureutherRosi’s son and also an ARD expert in Bormio, said: “The performance he delivers here, you can take your hat off to that more than three times.”

It’s difficult to say whether Franjo von Allmen has already realized all of this. At the finish area in Bormio, where he sat in the leader’s chair, he made a rather disbelieving, doubtful impression. But: It’s really him.
