Anti-discrimination advice is over: the federal government is to blame

Brandenburg’s state government explains why the state’s anti-discrimination advisory service has to close. The federal government has stopped co-financing.

After criticism of the end of the anti-discrimination advice in the state of Brandenburg, the state government explained the decision. “In summary, the reason is the loss of federal funding,” said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health. The fact that there should be no more federal funding is a decision of the federal government. So far, the federal government has borne a large part of the costs.

There was clear criticism from several quarters about the closure of the advice center. “From today on, people who are discriminated against in Brandenburg because of a disability, their age, gender or their sexual identity no longer have independent specialist advice,” said Birgit Peter, head of the Brandenburg anti-discrimination advice service. The state government failed to “secure this important support”.

“Anyone who experiences discrimination needs protection, support and reliable structures,” added Judith Porath, managing director of the Victim Perspective Association. The end of general anti-discrimination advice means a “massive step backwards” for equality and social justice in the state of Brandenburg.

Brandenburg’s Health Minister Britta Müller (independent) also recently explained the decision to eliminate the position. “We would have secured co-financing for this year, which would have been 25,000 euros,” she told the Lord. “But if federal funding doesn’t come, we can’t pay 260,000 euros on our own. That’s not possible in the current economic situation.”

Since 2009, the anti-discrimination consultancy has provided professional advice and support for people who experience discrimination. Initially the offer was limited to cases of racial discrimination. From 2023, the position has been expanded to include all discrimination criteria of the General Equal Treatment Act.
