It only recently became known that the head of the “Tagesthemen” editorial team, Helge Fuhst, was leaving ARD. Now it is clear where he is headed.

Fuhst is the presenter of the ARD news program, head of the “Tagesthemen” editorial team and second editor-in-chief of ARD-aktuell, where, among other things, “Tagesschau” is produced. At Springer He is now taking over the chairmanship of the editors-in-chief of the “Premium Group”, which includes the Springer brands Welt, Politico Germany and Business Insider belong. At the same time, Fuhst becomes editor-in-chief of Welt-Group.
“With Helge Fuhst, an outstanding journalist and excellent media manager is taking over the editorial leadership of the Premium Group,” said Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner. He will continue to expand on the path that was successfully taken a year ago with the creation of the Premium Group and sharpen the strategic direction of the brands together with the editors-in-chief.
Predecessor leaves for health reasons
Fuhst follows at the Welt to Jan Philipp Burgard (41), who is resigning from his position with immediate effect for health reasons.
It was already announced last week that Fuhst was leaving ARD. The 41-year-old has been leading the ARD “Tagesthemen” since 2019. Before working at ARD-aktuell, Fuhst was program manager of the event channel Phoenix from January 2018 to September 2019 and moderated political discussion programs such as “Unter den Linden” and “Der political Frühschoppen”. Fuhst began his career at NDR and was supported by “Tagesthemen” presenter Tom Buhrow.
When Buhrow became director of WDR in 2013, Fuhst went to Cologne as his personal advisor and moved to Phoenix in 2016. In 2024 he applied for the position of WDR director as Buhrow’s successor and achieved a surprise success when he relegated the favored WDR program director Jörg Schönenborn to the spot. In the second round of voting he was defeated by the current incumbent, Katrin Vernau. Fuhst stayed with ARD-aktuell; his contract was only recently extended.
