More border protection, more deportations, targeted labor migration: The EU Commission has announced its five-year strategy for migration.
epd | For the first time, the EU Commission has launched a European strategy for Asylum and migration management presented. It defines the EU’s political guidelines and priorities for the next five years: a “fair and at the same time consistent” migration system that curbs illegal migration, better protects those in need of protection and specifically attracts skilled workers for the European labor market, as the Commission explained.
EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner emphasized that control over illegal migration should regain trust in the EU institutions and at the same time create the basis for legal migration. “One requires the other,” he said.
“Migration diplomacy” as a new focus
The strategy does not yet contain any new instruments, but has a clear focus on “migration diplomacy”. Third countriesto make deportations easier and strengthen cooperation. Brunner cited trade policy, development cooperation and the issuing of visas as levers.
Passed on Thursday the commission also an EU-wide visa strategy for the first time. It is intended to enable a more efficient visa policy, strengthen security, facilitate legal mobility and increase the EU’s competitiveness.
The major EU asylum reform that has been initiated in recent years is expected to be implemented by summer 2026. The new strategy also sets goals for the period afterwards.
