Insurers do not want compulsory insurance. The renovation rate is too low. An ADAC president resigns because of climate protection demands.
Currently, only a good half of residential buildings in Germany are insured against natural disasters such as floods – although these risks are increasing with climate change. The federal government is planning mandatory insurance. The lobby association for the German insurance industry, GDV, doesn’t think this is a good idea. Verena Kern and Jonas Waack explain why in climate update°.
Fewer and fewer houses in Germany are being renovated for energy efficiency. In 2025, the renovation rate fell to 0.67 percent for residential buildings and to 0.92 percent for non-residential buildings. Industry associations are now reporting this. In order to achieve a climate-neutral building stock, a quota of at least 2 percent is required. A study by the Climate Neutrality Foundation sees things differently.

There is talk of 60,000 layoffs in January. However, 100,000 new members were added that month. Why didn’t the ADAC get behind Hillebrand?
