Nudity and sex in “The Sims”: “There is a double standard when it comes to sexual content”

The characters in the game “Sims 4” have sex. But you can’t see it. Instead, sex is hidden by shower steam, blankets and the like. The programmer Turbodriver has therefore created a mod, i.e. a game expansion, that makes the act visible. Thanks to him, the Sims can also menstruate. And abortions are finally possible.

taz: Turbodriver, how did you come to create a sex mod for “The Sims 4” to program?

Turbodriver: The “Sims” series is a life simulation. Since sex is part of life, it makes sense to create appropriate content.

In the interview: The person

TURBODRIVER (own spelling) is the creator of the modification “WickedWhims” for “The Sims 4”. He comes from Poland. He wants to remain anonymous so that his name cannot be associated with the porn industry. The pseudonym comes from the synthwave music scene.

taz: How many people use your mod?

Turbodriver: On average 400,000 people a day. That’s how often my server gets pinged because someone starts the game and has installed the mod.

taz: That’s quite a lot. 2024 has Manufacturer Electronic Arts stated that “The Sims 4” has 80 million players – but only a fraction of them play every day.

Turbodriver: I can hardly believe it myself. But it’ll happen. Players who play with burned versions can also install my mod. And there will be a few, because the expansion packs are very expensive. Not everyone can afford that.

taz: Your mod can be downloaded for free. Why? You would definitely earn more with a paywall.

Turbodriver: I don’t think so – on the contrary. There is social pressure in the modding community to make content accessible to everyone. This creates respect and trust. Especially when it comes to sexual needs that people live out with the mod, I don’t want to be accused of profiting from these needs. A paywall would probably cost me a lot of supporters.

taz: Besides, the manufacturer wouldn’t like that, right?

Turbodriver: Exactly. Modding is a legal gray area. Electronic Arts has nothing against it, but only as long as the mods remain available for free.

taz: But people can talk to you the Platform Patreon support voluntarily. How much do you earn?

Turbodriver: I currently have 15,800 paying members on Patreon. I prefer not to say how much I earn exactly. But if you assume that everyone pays my standard contribution of 4.50 euros per month, I earn around 60,000 euros net per month.

taz: And don’t you want to take the credit? Why are you appearing anonymously?

Turbodriver: My work counts as pornography and is therefore a controversial topic. I’m afraid of the consequences if I reveal my name. That it will be more difficult for me to reorient myself professionally if I no longer want to do the mod one day.

taz: Do you have to justify your work?

Turbodriver: Never in my private environment. I get mostly positive feedback online. Occasionally someone shouts a hate post into the vastness of social media. But I rarely receive direct criticism.

taz: If you want to download “WickedWhims”, you have to state that you are over 18 years old. But you can simply click away such windows. Do you know how many minors use your mod?

Turbodriver: No, no idea.

taz: Should politicians impose stricter requirements regarding… Youth protection make?

Turbodriver: They’re already in the works. In the UK, platforms with explicit content have been required to record age since mid-2025. Basically I think that’s good. But for me it won’t be easy to implement.

taz: Why?

Turbodriver: Until now, my website was independent of third-party providers. That will change when I have to get the age verified. This third party then receives data from the players. And secondly, it costs money. I will be able to afford it, but not all self-employed people can. I wish the UK had provided a safe and cost-effective service.

taz: In addition to sex, there is also sex in your mod abortionsone sexually transmitted disease and Menstruation. Do you see yourself as an enlightener?

Turbodriver: No, not intentionally anyway. Anyone who plays a life simulation wants it to be as realistic as possible. I pursue this claim with “WickedWhims”. The enlightenment is a side effect. To this day I still receive questions about menstruation. What causes the most confusion is that Sims have different levels of fertility depending on the timing of their cycle. Of course, as a man, I had to read up on it when I programmed this part of the mod. But I would have thought that as a woman you would be familiar with it.

taz: Do you see yourself as a feminist activist?

Turbodriver: I listen to my community and try to implement their wishes. This has nothing to do with activism.

taz: Making legal abortion available as a gaming option is definitely a political decision today.

Turbodriver: Of course my mod is a product of my political beliefs. Feminist attitudes also influence my work, but not only. Each component of the mod is the result of individual considerations.

taz: Sex and nudity in games are controversial. In 2025, gaming platforms such as itch.io and Steam had to restrict their adult content due to pressure from payment service providers. Do you have the feeling that resistance to so-called adult content is growing?

Turbodriver: No, on the contrary. Game manufacturers are becoming more open to explicit content. An example is “Cyberpunk 2077,” which features a lot of nudity. There is a double standard in the industry when it comes to sexual content. Major game companies can include sex scenes in their games without any consequences. Indie games are punished much more quickly by platforms by being marked as adult games and shown to fewer people.

taz: How do you get your mod to people?

Turbodriver: I launched “WickedWhims” on the website Loverslab. Many modifications are shared there that are considered adult content. Now I’m trying to move away from the forum.

taz: Why?

Turbodriver: I don’t want people to have to see things they don’t want to see. Loverslab, for example, allows the depiction of sexual assault, sodomy and sometimes physical and psychological violence. This is too blatant for most people.

taz: Should a forum like Loverslab even exist?

Turbodriver: Yes. Loverslab is one of the few places on the internet that specializes in sexual mods. Precisely because the Internet is centralizing on fewer and fewer platforms that restrict sexual content of all kinds, we must protect such forums. The fact that some of the things you find there don’t appeal to me doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t exist. In order to have a platform that is more in line with my moral values, I launched my website a year ago. Other “Sims 4” modders can also publish their content there.

taz: Do you give the modders guidelines?

Turbodriver: At least I have guidelines. But I find it difficult. When it comes to sexuality, on the one hand you want to give people the freedom to express themselves. On the other hand, there is so much that can shock, mislead or hurt. Before I invite creators to my platform, I take a close look: How do they appear? How do they present their content? What is the tone?

taz: What are you planning next for “WickedWhims”?

Turbodriver: Actually, I won’t reveal what I’m working on. Then the community immediately has expectations that I may not be able to meet. But because I’m already very far along with my current project, I’ll give you a spoiler: I’m working on a new job: camgirl.
