Protests in the USA: How is Minneapolis resisting ICE?

After the killing of Renée Good, more and more Americans are defying Donald Trump’s deportation policy. What do you want to say to the president?

Last week, officials from the US deportation agency ICE in Minneapolis shot a woman – the videos spread extremely quickly. This shows that Renée Good was by no means about to run over an ICE police officer – but that didn’t stop Trump and his people from calling her a “terrorist” anyway. The government also sent a thousand more ICE officers to Minneapolis to search for undocumented migrants.

At the same time, after the killing, tens of thousands demonstrated in broad daylight against the brutal actions of ICE, in several US cities, but especially in Minneapolis itself. They are demanding an end to the brutal searches for migrants, which primarily affect liberal communities in the US. In Minneapolis, people are currently gathering Resistance to Trump’s policies. While many want to stand in the way of ICE in a peaceful manner, there are also some who are already talking about an impending civil war.

There is also the question of how stable Trump’s government is. The president’s popularity ratings are somewhat in the basement, which is mainly due to the high cost of living. But while many MAGA voters are in favor of more deportations, that too is failing brutal actions by ICE increasingly coming under criticism. There are signs that the Republicans could suffer losses in the midterm elections in the fall.

taz author Sebastian Moll went to Minneapolis last weekend to talk to those who are currently resisting Trump’s deportation policy. He tells taz foreign editor Leon Holly what he heard and experienced there in the new episode of the long-distance connection.

This episode was recorded on January 13, 2026 at 3 p.m. Central European Time.
