America has yet again lost another stalwart in the entertainment industry. Quincy Jones, a top American producer who worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, died at 91.
He died on Sunday night, November 4 at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles.
Quincy Jones’ surviving family confirmed his death in a public statement. In a statement, they described the late genius as a father and a brother.
“Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing,” Quincy Jones’ family statement reads.
The statement continues to call Quincy Jones a great loss to the family. However, they are poised to celebrate his achievement and the pride he brought to the Quincy family.
“And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him.” the statement continues.
“He is truly one of a kind and we will miss him dearly; we take comfort and immense pride in knowing that the love and joy, that were the essence of his being, was shared with the world through all that he created. Quincy Jones could easily pass for the title, “Survivor”. The music genius survived many life-threatening events early on in life.
Quincy Jones escaped an early death in 1974 when he was just 41 years old. He had a brain aneurysm and underwent brain surgery but was told soon after that he had a second aneurysm ready to explode.
He underwent another surgery. However, Quincy Jones was told his chance of survival was very slim. Against all odds, Quincy Jones survived all of these and became one of the greatest to ever do it.
Again, Quincu Jones survived a gory accident when he was 57 years old. According to his narration, when he was, he and a group of friends were heading to a rodeo in Yakima when a bus hit them.
Every other person involved died apart from him. As a result, he became traumatised and hadn’t been able to drive a car since the gruesome event.
Early Life
The Chicago native was born on March 14, 1933. He was born into a family of music lovers. His mother who was a religious music singer introduced him to music.
His journey into the entertainment industry began when he started playing the trumpet at a young age. This prestigious journey at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Quincy Jones rose to prominence as a trumpet player in bands for jazz music greats including Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie.
Quincy Jones’ breakthrough came in 1961 when he became vice president of Mercury Records. Consequently, he became the first African American to hold the prestigious office.
As he passes on, Quincy Jones will be remembered for contributing to the success of great musicians such as Michael Jackson, Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Donna and Summer, just to mention a few.
