rtr | The Federal Cabinet decided on Wednesday to centralize the supervision of AI applications in companies in the future and, if possible, to give companies a single contact person. In the draft of the so-called AI Market Surveillance and Innovation Promotion Act (KI-MIG), the Federal Network Agency is intended to act as a central coordination and competence center, market surveillance authority and notifying authority. “With this law, we are implementing European requirements with maximum openness to innovation and creating lean AI supervision with a clear view of the needs of the economy,” said Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger.
The government wants to bundle digital expertise at the Federal Network Agency. On the one hand, this should enable safe use of AI without weakening the innovative power of companies on the other. The existing market surveillance authorities should continue to be the only point of contact for companies – if these authorities do not yet exist in individual areas, this will be the Federal Network Agency in the future.
The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (Bafin) has been and continues to be responsible for the banking sector. However, it still needs to be clarified who will be responsible for supervision at in the futurethe employment law consequences of the use of AI. In the opinion of the Digital Ministry, the one-stop-shop principle should apply to companies, meaning they should have a single contact person. The use of AI products in companies has increased enormously in recent months.
The draft, which is now being discussed in parliament, is the implementation of the corresponding EU directive.
