Herning. Good day… everyone is talking about 2016. #2016 is going through the roof. Throwback 2016. Everywhere. Instagram. TikTok. I wonder if 2026 is the new 2016. Hopefully not. After David Bowie’s death on January 10th, everything went downhill. Prince was next. And Peter Lustig. Corona wasn’t even a clue, we wore skinny jeans, giggled to dog selfie filters. The first season of Stranger Things blew us away, and then Donald Trump was elected president. We had no idea. But in a better mood.

Die Handball-EM 2016 was my first big tournament as a reporter for Kieler Nachrichten. The European Championships 2026 will be my tenth. My hair was darker, my pants were tighter. I posed with the European Championship cup, wore a strange Mickey Mouse European Championship glove in a photo with national player Tobias Reichmann and used a strange vintage filter. Germany became European champions. I thought it would go on like this forever. I waited for six or seven tournaments. And longer.
