ap | In Minneapolis, a US immigration officer shot a person in the leg during an operation. The shooting apparently occurred during an arrest after the officer was attacked by the person with a shovel and a broom handle, a source familiar with the case told the AP.
The US Department of Homeland Security said on X that federal officials had arrested one person Venezuela stopped who was staying in the USA illegally. The person fled by car, crashed into a parked vehicle and then ran away on foot, the ministry said. After the officers reached the person, two other people arrived from a nearby apartment and all three attacked the officer, the ministry said. The officer fired a shot out of “fear for his life and safety.”
The two people who came out of the apartment are therefore in custody. The city of Minneapolis said on X that the man who was shot was being treated in the hospital and his injuries were not life-threatening. “We understand that there is anger,” it continued. “We ask the public to remain calm.”
The shooting occurred around seven kilometers away north of where an ICE officer shot 37-year-old Renee Good while behind the wheel of her car on January 7th. The incident has caused widespread concern across the country and particularly in the US state of Minnesota led to protests.
