There are very few people in this world that can take a clothing detail synonymous with banker bros and make it the hottest ticket in fashion – unironically. But we really shouldn’t put anything past Phoebe and Matthieu, now should we.
Turns out the next sweater that you will not be able to unsee is the quarter zip. It has taken the buttoned polo hostage and relegated her to the top shelf (for now.)
You only need one of these sweaters but the detail is strong enough that it warrants its own letter and a place in your closet. So including five very different options today to ensure you find the version right for your wardrobe. You’ll be shocked how much you reach for it. Enjoy!
Zippers on sweaters are not new but they are newly re-entering the fashion knit-o-sphere. There were earthy zip cardigans at Prada which we will discuss in a future letter. And knit bombers at Polo. But the most important sweater of the season is certainly the quarter zip.
The zipper takes away from the sweetness of a knit. It is the utilitarian balance needed for all of those bold Chanel it-accessories the world went hysterical for and now you are wondering what to actually do with to make them live beyond a singular trend cycle. The metal of a zip brings it all back down to earth in a way?
The first quarter zip on my list is this thin, slinky, slouchy version from Soeur. It is the easiest to dress up and the easiest to layer. Pair it with a party skirt for dinner when you want to wear something “fun” but not overly exposed. A modest balance item for a mini skirt and big heels.
And also a great version to layer under blazers since it’s not chunky.
Second up, the big chunky cashmere quarter zip. This takes the place of our super heavy turtlenecks, giving our neck a little relief with the opening functionality. I love this black one below that I ordered from Aether after spotting it in their ski lookbooks (I’m already researching people!! 🙂 🙂 We’re looking at an El Nino winter!!) They sent me the sample to test drive since it’s not available until Thursday of this week (I’ll come back and link it then!) but it was good enough to include early. I love the weight – a cashmere/wool blend that is quite heavy for $425. It has a stiff enough collar to stand up and a slouchy fit without being so oversized. I want to wear this idea with real clothes, not just lounge pants (though it’s also great to pair with lounge pants!)
The other one that made me SQUEAL? Remember the ALC crewneck sweater from Feb’s 5 Great Things that not so secretly feels the exact same as the Alaia knits? Updated with a zip!! In the tan, it’s a great alt to the Chanel which is sold out anyway. It’s more structured than the wooly version, a little more fashion as sport. Great great great for dressed up daytime. And your best option for work.
But also just wear it with jeans. 🙂
And finally, No.5. An option for those of you who run hot. Funnily enough I looked to Cos to see if they had an option for this in long sleeve and I found their long sleeve version lacking – the neck too short, too flimsy. But I DID find an excellent short sleeve variety in the form of a zip polo. It’s extremely close to the Phoebe Philo version without feeling like a knock off. And just the right amount of slouch. I’ve ordered it, but since I’m still traveling to bring you the best for next season, I haven’t been able to try it on yet. But I’m confident we will love her.
I’m surprised by how much I love this category – the quarter zip. Should I be nervous we are going to be reaching for puffy vests soon!? 🤣 Happy Sunday everyone. Hope you have a wonderful week!
Yours TRULY,
Becky
