The latest revelations in the case of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein raise new questions, but they still lack concrete answers. Last week, the US Department of Justice published additional files and documents in the case as ordered by the US Congress. This included more than three million pages of text, 180,000 photos and over 2,000 video recordings.
The names of many well-known personalities are hidden in the documents, including a former government advisor, an NFL team owner and billionaire Bill Gates and Elon Musk. US President Donald Trump’s name also appears at least a thousand times. But the Republican does not have to expect any legal consequences.
“There are a lot of emails. There are a lot of photos. There are a lot of horrific photos that appear to have been taken by Epstein or people close to him. But that’s not necessarily enough to prosecute someone,” Assistant Attorney General Todd Blanche told CNN on Saturday. Not to mention that the 79-year-old Trump also enjoys almost complete immunity as the incumbent president – thanks to the Supreme Court.
The published documents mainly confirmed what was already known. Namely, that Epstein was friends with Trump and former President Bill Clinton for years. Both have said they knew nothing about Epstein’s actions.
Won in November 2024 Donald J. Trump for the second time a presidential election in the USA and has been in office as the 47th president since January 2025. He is driving forward the restructuring of public institutions and a change of course in foreign policy.
Trump commented on the release of the documents on Saturday: “I haven’t seen them myself, but I have been assured by very important people that they not only exonerate me, but prove exactly the opposite of what people expected.” What the US President means by this is unclear. There are voices who claim, so far without evidence, that Trump was also guilty of something in the Epstein case.
There is general dissatisfaction among the US population about the slow processing of the case. Epstein had abused underage girls for years and trafficked them to his clients. Just over a month after Epstein was indicted, he took his own life in a New York prison in August 2019.
Political quandary
For Trump, the scandal is a serious problem even without the risk of legal consequences. The Epstein controversy has cast a huge cloud over his return to the presidency. However, much of this is self-inflicted.
Trump himself had long fueled the conspiracy narrative rampant in the QAnon movement, Epstein was actually murderedto protect his powerful friends. During the election campaign two years ago, Trump’s loyal supporters promised that the so-called Epstein Files, including an alleged list of clients, would be published quickly after an election victory. What followed, however, was a quick retreat. This abrupt about-face and Trump’s stubborn resistance to releasing the files led to speculation that they might contain incriminating information about him or his associates.
In the end, the political pressure was too great and Trump gave in. But even with the publication, the topic is not off the table. There are questions about whether the Justice Department is deliberately keeping information secret to protect people.
Justice Minister Blanche denies this. The White House “did not tell us how to conduct our review, what to look for, what to redact and what not to redact,” the deputy attorney general said. Still, many MAGA voters feel betrayed. They, like many others in the US population, want to finally see that the people responsible are held accountable.
“What is important is not the publication of part of the Epstein files, but rather the criminal prosecution of those who committed heinous crimes with Epstein. Only when there is at least one arrest will justice be served. Otherwise, it is all just a show and a pure distraction,” explained Elon Musk, who is mentioned in the documents but against whom there are no allegations.
From a political perspective, this is an almost hopeless position for Trump, in part because he hesitated for so long to release the files. But that’s not all, because as long as the publication doesn’t result in an indictment, some will assume that the US government is withholding information. It is an acute political risk for the president because it appears to be one of the few issues on which Trump is in danger of his loyal MAGA voters to lose.
