We knew it was effectively a done deal as soon as Nathan Jones started to talk about Tyreece Campbell being “in really advanced negotiations” over a new contract.

The Welsh boss is closely guarded on nearly every aspect that relates to his squad – whether that be injuries, contract negotiations or transfer moves.

So the fact that Jones produced that positive update about Campbell after the 2-1 win over Derby County on the opening day was telling.

And when he was asked once again on Saturday about the Jamaican international, whose his excellent finish put the Addicks 2-0 ahead at West Ham’s London Stadium, it told you that the club’s number seven was staying.

“We’ll have some good news for you coming up,” Jones told talkSPORT. “We are in a very good place with that.”

Confirmation that TC had put pen to paper on improved and extended terms came this morning.

Campbell has signed a four-year contract.

Jones told the club’s official website: “Ever since I came to the football club, TC has been someone that I earmarked as being a special talent. We just felt he needed guidance and a bit of time to turn into the player that we know he can be.

“We think tying down the players that we feel can really take us forward is as big as signing new players, so we’re delighted that he’s signed a new deal. We fought off a lot of competition and have turned down offers for him, and the great thing is that TC showed a real desire to sign.”

Campbell said: “I’m really happy to sign a new long-term contract. This club means a lot to me, I’ve been here since I was nine years old and I’ve grown up here. I’m grateful for all of the people who have helped me on my journey. It’s been a really good start to the season for the team and myself – hopefully that continues.”

Preston North End’s interest in Campbell was genuine. But their fervour for a transfer was not matched by the player.
