Denmark and Greenland have proposed a NATO mission for Greenland. On Saturday, Trump once again fueled the dispute over Greenland.
afp | Denmark and Greenland have proposed a NATO mission for the Arctic autonomous region. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said this on Monday evening in the presence of Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt after a conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Danish television.
“We proposed it, the Secretary General has taken note of it and we think we can now – hopefully – determine the framework in which this can be made concrete,” said Poulsen.
Greenland As an autonomous region, it belongs to the EU and NATO country Denmark. In recent weeks, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed ownership of Greenland and justified this with US national security interests in the Arctic. There was mostly talk of buying the area, but Trump did not rule out military force.
On Saturday had Trump He fueled the dispute over Greenland again by threatening punitive tariffs for Germany and other European NATO countries if they did not agree to the US takeover of Greenland.
Since Denmark, like the USA, is a member of NATO, the conflict over Greenland threatens to split the defense alliance. Against the background of Trump’s threats, a fact-finding mission of several NATO countries took place in Greenland this week at the invitation of Denmark, in which the Bundeswehr also took part with 15 soldiers. All countries involved are now affected by Trump’s tariff threat.
