Charlie Kelman says out-of-form Charlton Athletic ‘not scared’ of Boro test, yet another defeat as WSL 1 survival already looking a tall order and Konsa nets first Arsenal goal

It’s the latest review of the week.

Kelman not writing off prospects of a result at Boro

Charlie Kelman has insisted there will be no fear factor for Charlton Athletic when they head to Championship leaders Middlesbrough on Saturday.

But the Addicks frontman did admit that the side are “low on confidence” after a 3-1 loss to Norwich at the weekend made it nine matches without a victory for Nathan Jones’ side.

The challenge looks daunting for the south London club as Boro went top of the table with a 5-1 demolition of Bolton Wanderers on Friday night. Will Lankshear has scored as many league goals – 11 – as the entire Charlton squad.

The Addicks did win on Teesside last season. Conor Coady’s 59th-minute goal decided a match in which the hosts had 34 shots but only seven on target.

“It’s going to be tough but we went there needing a result last year as well and we got a result,” said Kelman, who opened his scoring account for the campaign against Norwich. “It’s a fair fight – it’s 11 men against 11 men.

“We’re not scared. We are going to go there and take the game to them. We can beat any team in the division, as we’ve shown at the start of the season (winning at West Ham).

“It is a disappointing day (against Norwich). We got off to a great start in the first 20-25 minutes but little things that have been creeping into our performances over the past few weeks started creeping in again. We started dropping too deep and giving them too much respect.”

So why were Charlton unable to maintain a strong start against the Canaries?

“I don’t know – I think we’re low on confidence as well,” said Kelman. “We haven’t won in a while now so when you take the lead you want to protect it, especially here at home.

“We can’t dwell on it, there is a long way to go in this division. We need to dust ourselves down, regroup and put in a performance at Middlesbrough.”

Norwich City head coach Philippe Clement said: “We didn’t start the game well. Charlton pressed in a different way than they had been doing for weeks. So the team had difficulty to recognise that.

“It is a big working point for us to get experience on those things and speak on the pitch about what the solutions are. It took 15-20 minutes to get in contact with them. After, when they understood, we started to play our football.

“We went behind in that period but this group has a lot of desire to get results. After 15-20 minutes we took domination of the game and scored three good goals – and it could’ve been more.”

WSL 1 survival hopes suffer another setback

Charlton Athletic are now six points adrift of safety after a 1-0 loss at Birmingham City on Sunday afternoon.

Karen Hills’ side have lost all seven of their WSL matches since promotion and only scored three times.

Wilma Leidhammar scored in the 68th minute at St Andrew’s with Charlton having an open play xG of just 0.05 (0.39 in total).

Birmingham had 20 shots, five on target, with a final xG of 2.26.

“You’ve got to put the ball in the back of the net – unfortunately we didn’t do that and they did it today,” Hills told the club’s X account. “I need that ruthlessness in the final third because it was quite an even game.”

The Addicks host West Ham United in the League Cup on Wednesday evening (7.30pm) before the visit of Chelsea to The Valley on November 1 (2.30pm).

Charlton won their first match of the campaign in midweek, Emily van Egmond and Lizzie Waldie on target in a 2-0 League Cup success against Bristol City in SE7.

Devil is in the detail

Charlton Athletic U21s bowed out of the Kent Senior Cup on Tuesday as they lost 2-1 at Tonbridge Angels.

Marley Rayment-Dawkins had levelled late on in the second round tie only for the hosts to find a winner just before full-time.

U21 boss Chris Lock told the club’s official website: “The manner of the last-minute winner is disappointing.

“It is a bit of Jekyll and Hyde, in terms of the way that I feel. You are looking at a majority of an U19s side playing against a very good senior National League South side. The boys have been able to be competitive and given them a good game.”

Yes he Kan

Daniel Kanu got his first goal for Notts County in their midweek 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

The 21-year-old striker joined the League One club on loan at the end of the summer transfer window.

Kanu had made seven appearances before netting from the spot in the 38th minute. The Sierra Leone international won the penalty, going down under a challenge from Gabriel Otegbayo.

Kanu sent former Addicks team-mate Ashley Maynard-Brewer the wrong way.

Konsa’s strong start for Gunners

Ezri Konsa scored his first goal for Arsenal in their 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday.

The 29-year-old defender, who signed for the Gunners in August, has made 11 appearances this season.

Stats site WhoScored posted on X that Konsa, a Charlton academy graduate, has the highest pass accuracy (96.9 per cent) of any player in the Champions League this season. He started in their 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich on Wednesday at the Allianz Arena.

Konsa put Arsenal on their way to the win over the Toffees which moved them level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City. He scrambled in from a Martin Odegaard corner. It is the first corner that the north Londoners have converted this season.

Andy Woodman/Picture: Keith Gillard

Woody not ranting and Raven

Andy Woodman, goalkeeping coach at Charlton during Alan Pardew’s spell as boss, was sacked by Bromley on Thursday.

The 55-year-old won two promotions and the FA Trophy during his time with the Ravens.

“Naturally, I am disappointed that I have not been given the time and opportunity to steer the club through its current difficulties and turn our season around, particularly when we are just one point away from safety,” said Woodman, in a statement issued to the League Managers’ Association.

“I firmly believe that, given the opportunity and the return of key players from injury, we could have given ourselves every chance of achieving our objective.”

Woodman had been in charge at Bromley for more than five years and was the third longest-serving boss in England’s top four leagues.

His departure means Johnnie Jackson is now seventh in that table with Nathan Jones in 16th.

Dons supporting Skiverton

Ex-Charlton Athletic first-team coach Terry Skiverton has been diagnosed with throat cancer.

The 51-year-old had a four month spell with the Addicks as part of Johnnie Jackson’s backroom team in 2022. The pair left when then owner Thomas Sandgaard appointed Ben Garner to the SE7 hotseat.

Skiverton was appointed assistant manager to Jackson when he took the AFC Wimbledon job.

“Terry has been receiving valuable support from the League Managers Association (LMA) in recent months, and the club will continue to stand alongside him and his family throughout his treatment and recovery,” said the Dons in a statement on their website.

“Everyone at AFC Wimbledon sends Terry their heartfelt best wishes as he prepares for the next stage of his treatment.”

Brilliant by Bree

We know that James Bree has a rocket in that right foot – who can forget that sumptuous strike at Derby County last season while he was on loan with the Addicks?

Well, the 28-year-old was back scoring another Goal of the Month contender in Southampton’s 3-2 win over West Ham at St Mary’s on Saturday. What an absolute rocket.

Bree has bagged two goals for the Saints this season, settling the South Coast derby against Portsmouth earlier this month.
