Charlton Athletic have produced so many players through their esteemed academy that it has been dubbed ‘The Sparrows Lab’. But getting some formulas right can be tricky.
Campbell’s journey through the club’s youth system, starting at the age of nine, is a story that shows the virtue of persistence. Not just by the player, now 22 and the leading attacking light in Nathan Jones’ first-team, but also the people who coached and mentored him on his way through.
Make no mistake, there were times when those staff members were told that Campbell would not make it. Too problematic. That he would prove to be too much hassle – the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze. But that was ignored.
This is his tale, but told by others. You would expect that. Campbell is quiet and curt in media interviews. Luckily there are the likes of Joe Francis, Daniel Gill, Rhys Williams and Steve Avory, all stalwarts in Charlton’s academy, to provide fascinating background.

“Emotionally he was quite a challenge for some of the staff – to find a way of connecting with him,” Francis told South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition. “What we learned with TC, over time, was that we needed to have a different approach and allow him to express himself in a different way.

“It was clear that the football pitch was always his sanctuary. What I mean by that is that he found a way of expressing himself on it that didn’t come naturally to him off it. He has always been very quiet.
